Right after releasing a minor update for the N900, Nokia made a major firmware release available for public download. Not only this update brings new features, it also makes the device faster and more convenient to use everyday. The v51.1 update itself weights approximately 90MB and contains so many changes that you may even need a few days to notice them all!
Among the changes, the N900 now supports portrait mode in the web browser, which lets you use it when walking. However, this feature is not activated by default and you will have to manually enable it in the browser settings. The update also allows the N900 to support Microsoft Exchange 2003, which will make email sync easier for business users. The other changes will make the device very convenient to use, as the N900 now supports the Flip Silent feature that allows you to turn the phone to silence an incoming call, which is very convenient during a meeting!

The N900 also supports another feature making it easier to handle calls you can't answer, as you now can reject a call with an SMS, exactly like with S60 phones. The last major thing the update brings is Ovi Maps improvements, which makes it faster and more stable, especially in terms of route recalculation. Other changes include system and video improvements that make the device faster and more reliable, but also optimize battery usage.
You can also view the entire changelog here, but be warned it's huge, so you might need to take some time to read it!
In order to update your device, you first need to install the minor update we were telling you about. After that, the N900 should automatically prompt you to install the new firmware. Just in case it doesn't, you can manually check for updates by going to the Application Manager and clicking on "Updates". |
