Even though Nokia announced the N900 as an Internet Tablet, many users bought it as a mobile phone. Therefore, they would like to use it in portrait mode, which is definitely more convenient if you want to use it as a cell phone, especially when walking. A first step towards use in portrait mode was the implementation of a dedicated mode in the web browser, which enabled users to use the N900 in portrait mode, but was only limited to the web browser
However, Baptiste Martin, a good friend of ours and an editor for MaemoFrance, experienced a bug that led his N900 to stay in portrait mode after a phone call. What he noticed is really interesting, as many applications were actually displaying very properly in portrait mode, which could mean Nokia has already implemented it, but will enable it later on. This could confirm the rumors saying the N900 will soon have a real portrait mode available in all the applications, especially knowing that the phonebook, the calendar and other basic applications seemed already designed for use in this mode. Here are some photos showing how the phone behaved during the bug, while waiting for an official support of this mode.
