Even though Symbian's interface is not to be criticized, Nokia has realized that the competition's products were more intuitive and easier to use. For that reason, Nokia is making Symbian's interface much more simple and better looking. As you may know, Symbian's transition will go through S^3 to finally reach S^4, which is the platform Nokia expects to give their phones a fresh look and bring more customers. We were recently presenting you some images of S^3's interface, showing the it was starting to be easier to use. As we mentioned, Nokia knows Symbian prompts the user too often and are working on this, which will be one of the major improvements brought by S^3. What users should expect with S^4 is a new interface offering transparency and features that will make the interface look more modern but also make it easier to use. To give you a little idea of what the system will look like, here are some screenshots and videos that were recently released and confirmed to be what S^4 will look like, even though the system is very likely to change.

The interface is somehow similar to Maemo but also to Android, especially the widgets part, and prove that the Finnish manufacturer looks at what other do and thus improves their own system. What is great about the homescreen is that you can move widgets around and don't have to put them in little boxes, like on the N97. You can also use several screens to display widgets as you want, which isn't possible with the N97, although many users would love to be able to do it. Regarding the photo gallery, even though the phone doesn't do much more than what an N97 can do, its photo gallery's interface is much more user-friendly, thanks to its icon-based interface. This is mainly what you should expect with the future versions of Symbian: a much more user-friendly system based on icons and transparent graphics, not to mention the many other features announced. S^4 should be finalized by the end of this year and will start powering phones in the first quarter 2011.
